Frankincense (Boswellia sacra/ carteri) is a calming aroma with a soft earthy, citrus scent historically used for inflammation and beautifying the skin tone. It is listed in the Ebers Papyrus, an Egyptian scroll written about 1500 BCE. Frankincense was given to baby Jesus at birth, considered a holy oil in the Middle East.
Use it diluted in carrier oil topically to enhance a meditative state. It is used as a base note in aromatherapy blends. Frankincense helps to center the mind, stopping mental chatter and encouraging contemplation. Frankincense yields an essential oil from steam distillation of the oleogum resin produced by the bark of the tree.
