Patchouli, (Pogostemon patchouli),is well known for tension reducing properties. The oil is produced from steam distilled dried, fermented leaves. The best quality is aged at least 1 year before using, evolving into a very rich ,fruity aroma.. Patchouli has the highest odor intensity of any essential oil. It may take time to appreciate its qualities.
The essential oil is traditionally a moth repellent, with a musky, smoky scent.
Patchouli blends well with Ylang ylang, Tonka bean, Lemon, Clary sage, Angelica root, Cedar wood, Labdanum, Vetiver, Sandalwood, Clove ,Rose and Jasmine.
A tiny drop of Patchouli can transform Rose oil onto another level of experience, as it allows the aroma of rose to unfold one petal at a time as a fragrance. Allow the duo to marry as a fragrance for 3-4 weeks to allow the full transformation to occur.
Patchouli is an excellent choice for Oriental blends. Combine it it with Sweet Orange, Ginger, Nutmeg and Cardamom, Cinnamon for a host of unusually fragrant essential oils. Once you get use to working with patchouli, it becomes a very versatile addition to blends. Dose lightly and allow Patchouli to walk softly into your odor memory.
