Organically grown aromatic herbs provide a variety of beauty aids.  Summertime brings an abundance of fresh herbs for health and beauty.  Many of these plants offer protection from too much fun in the sun.

Sunburn Remedy

To 4 ounces of apple cider vinegar, add

20 drops of Lavendula essential oil

Stir with a nonmetal spoon or stirring stick.  Apply to affected skin using clean cotton balls soaked and strained with the solution.  Use ever so gentle strokes, or dab each area using the cotton ball.  Repeat every 60 minutes as needed to control pain.  Drink several cups of water to assure hydration.  Apple cidar vinegar maintains the ph. of the skin.

As the skin heals, a softening, or demulcent, herbal application of Althea officinalis, marshmallow root, will soothe and calm irritated skin.  The skin will be radiant in a few days.

Skin Softening Blend

Simmer 3 tablespoons of Marshmallow root in a small pan containing 12 ounces of spring or distilled water.  Simmer, uncovered, for 15 minutes, stirring 3 times.  Remove from heat, cover the pan and refrigerate overnight.  The mixture will thicken.  Strain into a wide mouth glass jar.  Add the following essential oils, or 10 drops of oil of your choice, and blend with a nonmetal spoon.

                        2 drops of Sandalwood

6 drops of Ylang ylang extra

                        5 drops of Rose, Moroccan

Allow to cure, covered, for 3 hours.  Apply to clean skin.  Refrigerate remaining blend.  Use within 5 days.

Lips will also require protection in the summer.  Here’s a lip balm you can wear throughout the year.

Lip Balm

Measure 2 tablespoons of jojoba oil into a dark glass container with a tight fitting screw cap.

Add 4 drops of Carrot seed essential oil, Daucus carota.  Squeeze the vitamin E oil from a capsule of Dalpha and mixed tocopherols into the combination.  You can puncture the capsule using a heated sewing needle.

Cover and allow to cure.  Add 2 drops of Lavendula, if desired.

Using a double boiler or heating element, melt 2 tablespoons of organic beeswax.  Stir 2 tablespoons of jojoba oil; then add the jojoba oil, carrot seed blend.  Remove from heat immediately.  Stir well.  Spoon into a wide mouth glass jar with a screw top.  The balm will set as it cools.  After completely cool, screw on the lid.  Store at room temperature.

Apply to lips as needed to maintain softness and suppleness.

Sunlight brings out the freckles in me!  Here’s a soothing blend sure to lighten your “SPOTS”.

Freckle Buster

Boil 1 cup of water in a small pot.  Remove from heat.  Add 2 tablespoons of fresh parsley leaves and 2 tablespoons of Calendula or Marigold flowers.  Cover and steep 15 minutes.  Strain and remove all plant leaves.

Melt 2 tablespoons of coco butter in a microwave or over a double boiler.  Add the herbal infusion.   Beat at high speed with a hand blender 1 minute.

            Add 3 drops of lemon or lemongrass essential oil;

5 drops of Chamomile essential oil

Optional 2 drops of Marigold mint essential oil

Store in a wide mouth glass jar with a screw lid.  Apply to freckles and brown spots 2 times daily onto clean skin.  Refrigerate to ensure long term usage.

If you find the hot, summer days making you tired or grouchy, allow this cooling,

spearmint masque to turn your day into a happy one.

Cooling Spearmint Masque

Blend 1 cup of fresh spearmint leaves with 1 cup of cold water 1 minute at high speed.  Refrigerate 2 hours or longer.  Pour the cold contents onto a clean hand towel.  Relax and apply the towel to a clean face for 15 minutes, or as desired.

            Alternate blend:

Add 6 drops of Spearmint essential oil into 1 cup of cold water.  Pour onto a clean hand towel and apply to a clean face.  Avoid the eyes and any broken skin.  Relax and enjoy!

Late nights and long days can affect the under-eyes.  If you wake up to puffy under-eyes, use this opportunity to preserve the skin and delay aging, as well as reducing swollen under-eyes.

Puffy Eye Remedy

In 1 cup of boiled distill water, steep 2 bags of black tea for 5 minutes.  Strain.  Soak and strain 2 cotton balls.  Apply to closed eyelids, or underneath closed eyelids.  Remove and repeat 2 more times, totally 5 or 6 minutes.

Follow with a  compress of cold water.  Use a clean wash cloth, straining excess water before application.  Compress up to 5 minutes.  Remove cloth and pat dry.

In 1 teaspoon of jojoba oil, add 1 drop of Myrrh essential oil.  Pat the blend under each eye.  Myrrh is anti-aging, preserving skin quality and delaying aging, fine lines and wrinkles.  What a nice way to start the day!

Now proceed to the other end of the body, the feet.  Summer fun can lead to dry, cracked skin on the heels and feet.  The following blend will both soften and heal this skin.

Cracked Heel and Skin formula

Combine the following essential oils in 4 ounces of jojoba oil:

                        4 drops of Patchouli

                        8 drops of Geranium

                        4 drops of Rose

6 drops of Orange or 16 drops of Neroli

Bottle in dark glass with a tight fitting screw top.  Allow to cure overnight.

Apply to clean feet in the morning and at night.  Immediately put on socks to help hold in the moisture.  Patchouli is a great essential oil to heal cracked skin and regenerate new, healthy skin.  Your feet will smell better too!

Instead of using talc powder on your feet and skin, here’s a healthy alternative.

Natural Powder

            Combine in an airtight container:

½ cup Cornstarch or Potato starch

                         ½ cup Arrowroot

10 drops Rose or Lavendula essential oil

1/3 cup crushed, ground dry rose petals or lavender flowers.

Mix well and seal the container.

Allow to cure 3 days before applying to clean skin and feet

Both rose and, especially lavender essential oil, will soothe skin rashes from heat and sweating under the arms, behind the knees and underneath the feet.

            Enjoy a healthy summer!

Eucalyptus, the herb of the Aborigines

Eucalyptus, the herb of the Aborigines

Eucalyptus, the blue gum tree, originated in Australia.  Today, it is also cultivated in India, California, North Africa, Egypt, and Spain, prized for its essential oil.  It is a member of the Myrtle family.  There are at least 50 species of eucalyptus trees, an interest to every Koala bear.  Only two species are used in aromatherapy, Eucalyptus globules and citriodora.  The first is known as blue gum, with round blue green leaves.  Citriodora is the Lemon eucalyptus, having pointed leaves with 85% citronellal, a bactericidal.  The latter is more cooling and antiseptic with a pleasant lemon scent.

Australian Aborigines used eucalyptus to combat malaria and fevers.  The tree absorbs large amounts of water from the earth.  Natives combated malaria by growing trees near standing stagnant water.  When this was later repeated in other parts of the world, the eucalyptus eradicated the incidence of malaria.

In the 1900’s the botanist, von Muller, introduced the essential oil to the Western world.  The Eucalyptus globulus, the oil glands are visible when held up to the light.  Steam distillation produced the essential oil.  Fifty pounds of leaves and branches yields one pound of essential oil.  The Citriodora produces a lemon yellow, clear oil with a delicious lemon-scent.

Eucalyptus is one of the most well-known essential oils.  It certainly has one of the strongest odors and cancels many lighter scents when blended.  I like to combine eucalyptus and peppermint to see which one dominates the blend.  Both are great antispasmodic pain relievers and work well together.  However, I always think I smell like a locker room when I wear a blend with peppermint and eucalyptus.

Eucalyptus is popular in topical treatments for arthritis and rheumatism.  When stiffness and lack of mobility is a symptom, this massage blend will work wonders.  I prefer Lemon eucalyptus in this blend because it moves and drives trapped energy and pain.

Oh, my aching back blend

In 2 ounces of olive oil, or a carrier oil of choice, add the following essential oils.

10 drops of Lemon eucalyptus (citriodora)

                          2 drops of Pine

                          2 drops of Cedarwood

                          6 drops of Peppermint

                          1 drop of Clove

Allow to cure 3 hours.  Apply warm to the back, knees and legs, massaging using small circular motions.  Follow with warm, moist heat, as desired.  Massage the feet with the blend as the recipient relaxes.  Repeat as desired.

Store remaining blend in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap away from direct heat and bright light.

Eucalyptus is best known for its actions on the lungs, bronchial and throat.  It is a great remedy for coughs, colds, flu, bronchitis, asthma and upper respiratory infections.  As an inhalant, eucalyptus has been used to help tuberculosis patients.  I use it with chronic pulmonary disease patients.  The essential oil activates red blood cell function, carrying oxygen to every cell in the body.  Terpene is the natural occurring ingredient in eucalyptus that is very medicinal.  In synthetic and many commercial eucalyptus essential oils, terpene is removed.  The aroma is more fragrant, but less potent.  Check you source to make sure terpene is present.

When treating the lungs or asthma, eucalyptus is best diluted into a carrier oil.  Asthmatics may prefer aloe vera gel because it will feel cool on the skin.  Aloe is also detoxifying, even through the skin.  Others will benefit with jojoba or sweet almond oil.  The following blend will aid most upper respiratory problems for adults and teenagers.  Eucalyptus will help children more in an aroma lamp or by diffusing it into a room.

Lungs, Asthma, Colds and Flu Blend

In 2 ounces of carrier oil, combine the following essential oils:

                        10 drops of Lemon Eucalyptus

                          6 drops of Rosemary

                          1 drop of Tea Tree

3 drops of Sweet Basil, Ocimum basilicum

Combine well or cure for 3 hours when possible.

Massage the upper back using large, circular motions.  Gently massage the chest, using small circular motions, with several drops of blend.  Cover the upper torso with an old t-shirt or pajama top.  Repeat every 2 or 4 hours, as needed to reduce symptoms.

Asthmatic attacks often occur when the blood sugar drops.  Make sure the recipient drinks and/or eats every 4 to 5 hours, except when sleeping.  Lifestyle habits should include a balanced dietary program.

Store any leftover blend in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap.

Bronchitis may respond better to diffusion through an aroma lamp or room diffuser.  Eucalyptus may be used alone or in combination with pine, lavender, rosemary, Melissa, basil or lemon verbena.  Since eucalyptus overpowers lighter aromas, consider saving the lavender, Melissa and lemon verbena for other fragrant blends.  Eucalyptus alone is a powerful remedy for the lungs and bronchials.

Sinusitis is another problem eucalyptus will help.  It opens the sinuses to ensure proper drainage.  If there are pockets of infections, eucalyptus’ antibiotic properties can usually cure them.  I have used blends with clients who refused sinus surgery and their bodies healed when the problem was chronic infection.  Dot the blend across the forehead and around the cheeks, avoiding the eyes.  Repeat 2 or 3 times a day until symptoms clear.

Sinusitis Blend

In one ounce of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                        10 drops of Lemon Eucalyptus

                          1 drop of Sage

                          1 drop of Tea Tree

                          3 drops of Frankincense

                          1 drop of Ginger root

Allow to cure 3 hours, if possible.  Apply to clean skin on the forehead and cheeks.  Repeat every 2 to 3 hours, as needed to drain the sinuses.  For a stubborn infection, it may require several days of treatment.   If fever occurs, seek medical help as well.

Store remaining blend in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap.  Place in a cool area away from direct light.

Eucalyptus is an excellent addition to a cough suppressant blend.  Combine it with Cypress for spasmodic cough and Myrrh to reduce mucus.  Infuse a room or make this blend.

Spasmodic Cough

In 1 ounce of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                        6 drops of Eucalyptus

                        4 drops of Myrrh

                        3 drops of Cypress

2 drops of Anise seed (Star anise) (Illicium verum)

Allow to cure 3 hours when possible.  Massage the upper back and chest near the sternum.

This blend can be made into an inhalent by dropping the essential oil blend into 2 cups of steaming water.  The blend may also be added to an aroma lamp to infuse a room.

Store leftover blend in a dark, glass bottle with a screw cap.  Keep in a cool area away from direct sunlight.

Eucalyptus can be dabbed on insect bites and stings.  It effectively repels insects and kills lice.  As an antifungal, dilute it and apply on athlete’s feet.  Two drops of eucalyptus can be diluted in 1 tablespoon of carrier oil to treat the symptoms listed above.

In a sitz bath, eucalyptus treats cystitis, leucorrhea discharges and genital itching.  Eight drops diluted in a sitz bath for 15 to 20 minutes daily will usually clear symptoms in a few days.  Eucalyptus is not recommended for children in a bath or sitz bath.

A whiff of Eucalyptus, dropped on a hankie, can clear the mind of confusion and enhance clarity.  Interestingly, people nearby will either move closer or farther away from the aroma!

EARTH TONES Part III

EARTH TONES

Part III

Patchouli

Patchouli, Pogostemon cablin, is a tall herb in the mint family indigenous to southeast and tropical Asia. The leaves are huge, furry and topped with tiny white and purple flowers.  Fermented leaves are steam distilled to produce a dark amber essential oil, thick and very earthy smelling.  A good patchouli essential oil will improve with age, bringing a rich herbaceous aroma from the depths of a musk scent.  Every layer of aroma has high odor intensity, mysterious and distinctive.  In the Orient, patchouli leaves are stripped and woven into carpet and fabric for its scent and as an insect repellent.

In aromatherapy, patchouli benefits the nervous system as an antidepressant and aphrodisiac.  It also reduces stress and anxiety.  It is a scent diluted in small amounts; best combine with orange, floral and spicy aromas.  Allow the scent to grow to your liking.  Most women soften to its flavor when I tell them it reduces wrinkles and aging skin.  I did too!

Antidepressant Antianxiety blend

In ¼ ounce of carrier oil add the following essential oils:

                        20 drops of Neroli

12 drops of Rose (absolute has the most aroma in this blend)

                          2 drops of Patchouli

1 drop of Cedarwood (Virginia cedarwood is best in this blend) optional

Allow curing overnight.  Apply a few drops on the nape of the neck and massage gently.  You may also apply 1 drop to skin nearest the hairline above the ears.  The hair will allow the scent to lift slowly.  Reapply the blend again as needed, day or night.  Store in dark glass with a tight fitting cap. Refrigerate leftover blend.  This blend may be worn as a perfume.

Patchouli also works well at the far end of the body for athlete’s foot and fungal infections.  Here is a potent blend for fungal growth.

Antifungal blend

In 1 ounce of aloe gel or carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                        2 drops of Patchouli

                        2 drops of Tea tree

                        1 drop of Oregano

Allow curing 3 hours. Lightly massage on affected area twice daily.  Do a patch test if using on the groin area or any sensitive place before massaging the blend onto the entire area.  It may take at least 30 days before a cure occurs.  Store any leftover oil blend in a cool, dark place in dark glass with a tight fitting cap

Patchouli and rose are a classic combination for an ant aging formula and natural perfume.  Add a few drops of bergamot to add a lighter high (head) note.

Cypress

The Cypress tree, Cupressus sempervirens, is another grounding essential oil very connected to the earth.  An essential oil is produced from steam distillation of twigs and leaves,  The slightly yellow essential oil has a very resinous, warm balsamic aroma with a hint of a sweet ambergris scent.

Psychologically, Cypress brings out the best practical nature, dispelling scattered thoughts and avoidance of every day details.  The aroma gets our heads out of the clouds and keeps reality in the present moment.  Cypress restores calmness and supports those who feel “stressed out” or overburdened.  It combines with clary sage and lavender to stop crying spells.

Crying Spells

In ½ ounce of sesame oil, add the following essential oils:

                        5 drops of Cypress

                        20 drops of Lavendula

Note:  This blend can be released in an aroma lamp throughout a room.  Delete the sesame oil and only infuse the essential oils.

Physically, Cypress strengthens weakened connective tissue through massage.  Cypress aids in reducing heavy bleeding, especially during menses and menopause.  In massage, it reduces heat flashes and may inhibit growth of ovarian cysts.

EARTH TONES Part II

EARTH TONES

Part II

Ginger is a powerful and ancient root, indigenous to India.  Zingiber Officinale is

A rhizome, an underground stem that grows like a root, spreading simultaneously in every direction.  The tuberous roots are perennial, harvested in the fall after several months of growth.  Rhizomes grow close to the top layer of soil and can freeze very quickly if cold weather occurs.  This is not a problem in the costal regions of India.  However, ginger can be cultivated in any warm, moist climate and harvested before winter weather blows in from the North.

The essential oil of ginger root is produced during steam distillation to be used for culinary and medicinal purposes.  In aromatherapy, ginger is used in massages, footbaths, and as a fixative for fragrances.  Ginger is hot, spicy, pungent, and mildly sweet, warming and strengthening the recipient.  It is indicated for conditions of cold and weakness.  Psychologically, it benefits those who feel stuck in circumstances, or easily distracted.  If you change your mind often, ginger may be of great benefit. The energy is both grounding and moving, tonifying the organs and strengthening the legs and trunk of the body.  Improved circulation, digestion and elimination will result from adding a few drops of ginger to a blend.  The strong odor can overwhelm a blend, so use it sparingly.

Ginger relieves symptoms of arthritis and rheumatism.  Use it during winter months and when symptoms worsen from coldness.

Aching Joint Blend

In 2 ounces of carrier oil add the following essential oils:

                        8 drops of Eucalyptus

                        4 drops of Peppermint

                        4 drops of Juniper berries

                        2 drops of Ginger root

Allow to cure in a dark, glass bottle with a tight fitting lid 3 hours, or overnight.

Set the bottle in a bowl of hot water 5 minutes to warm the oil.  Before opening, turn the bottle to gently mix the oils. Apply to joints, sprains or aching muscles and massage in a clockwise circular motion.  Repeat in 30 minutes, if necessary, to alleviate pain and spasms.  Store in a cool, dark place.

Ginger has a very beneficial action on the lungs, enhancing immunity. A blend can be rubbed on the chest and upper back to alleviate flu, colds and bronchial spasms.

Upper Back and Chest Rub

In 2 ounces of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                        2 drops of Thyme

                        3 drops of Ginger

                        6 drops of Frankincense

                        2 drops of Pine

                        2 drops of Lemongrass

                        6 drops of Orange

Bottle in dark glass with a tightly fitting lid.  Allow to cure 3 hours, or overnight, before massaging the chest and/or upper back.  Use circular, clockwise motions.  Start

With a small circle and then use wider circular strokes.  Store leftovers in a cool, dark place or refrigerate.  The blend can be repeated once after 2 hours to alleviate symptoms.

For weak or chronic digestive complaints, use ginger root to improve assimilation and remove toxins.

Digestive Ease

In 2 ounces of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                        2 drops of Ginger

                        8 drops of Coriander seed

                        5 drops of Fennel seed

6 drops of Petitgrain or Orange

Bottle in dark glass with a tight fitting cap.  Allow to cure 3 hours or overnight.  Massage several drops on the abdomen and low back, using a clockwise, circular motion every night or as needed to enhance assimilation, reduce gas and increase elimination.

Ginger is used alone to reduce nausea, travel sickness and sinus pressure. Apply 2 drops to a clean handkerchief and inhale as needed to  reduce symptoms.

A footbath with ginger essential oil will quickly remedy chills and feelings of coldness.

Ginger Footbath

In 2 quarts of very warm water, add 2 drops of ginger.  Soak the feet until water cools.  Pat feet dry with a towel and wear socks or footies.

Palmarosa

Palmarosa, Cymbopogan Martinii, is a grassy herb, related to lemongrass and citronella and originating from India.  The aromatic leaves produce essential oil, extracted by steam distillation, from fresh, and partially dried leaves.  A pale liquid yields a citrus scent with very earthy undertones.  It is used in the cosmetic industry to extend or substitute rose oil, due to a slightly floral aroma.  I do not recommend substituting Palmarosa for rose oil. There is no comparison.

We have previously used Palmarosa in skin care blends for acne, dermatitis, scars and wrinkles. It can stimulate skin regeneration, as well as regulate sebum to reduce oily skin.  However, it has greater capacities to sooth and strengthen the nervous system.  The properties are similar to lavender, calming and balancing to the nerves.  Psychologically, it reduces shock and increases optimism during a crises.  For a balancing blend, combine it with geranium, sandalwood, bergamot, grapefruit and ylang ylang.

Comforting Massage

In 2 ounces of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                        10 drops of Palmarosa

                          6 drops of Bergamot

                          4 drops of Pink Grapefruit

                          2 drops of Geranium

                          4 drops of Sandalwood

Allow to cure 3 hours.  Massage the face, using light strokes, from the nose to each side of the face and forehead; the neck, using upward strokes; the hands and feet, using the thumbs to work the blend deeply into the tissue.

Bottle remaining blend in dark glass with a tight fitting cap.  Store in a cool, dry place or refrigerate.

Palmarose has positive effect on digestion and assimilation.  It is beneficial for anorexics, combined with geranium and grapefruit.  Pink grapefruit has a superb aroma.

Anorexia Blend

In 2 ounces of carrier oil add the following essential oils:

                        8 drops of Palmarosa

                      10 drops of Bergamot

                        3 drops of Pink Grapefruit

                        2 drops of Vetiver

Allow to cure 3 hours, or overnight.  Massage several drops on the abdomen daily before meals or upon arising and at bedtime.  Bottle in dark glass with a tightly fitted cap.  Refrigerate leftover blend.

Note:  This blend is beneficial for gastroenteritis, diarrhea and chronic condition affecting digestion.

Palmarose is also beneficial for balancing intestinal flora.  The following blend is useful after taking antibiotics or medication disturbing intestinal flora.

Intestinal Flora Blend

In 2 ounces of carrier oil add the following essential oils:

                        6 drops of Palmarosa

                      12 drops of Geranium

                        1 drop of Oregano

                        1 drop of Angelica root

Allow to cure 3 hours.  Massage several drops on the abdomen morning and nighttime.  Use circular clockwise strokes, deeply massaging the tissues.  It may take up to 3 weeks for maximum results to occur.

Palmarosa reduces scar tissue and stretch marks.  Use it daily for up to 90 days to regenerate healthy tissue.  The following blend utilizes rose and patchouli, also great essential oils to reduce scarring and stretch marks.

Scars and Stretch Marks

In 2 ounces of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                        20 drops of Palmarose

                          5 drops of Rose

                          3 drops of Patchouli

Bottle in dark glass with a tightly fitted cap.  Allow to cure overnight.  Massage several drops onto affected area very gently twice a day.  Store in a cool, dark place.

Patchouli is the next earth tone to study.

Creating a Natural Perfume

Creating a Natural Perfume

The challenge in creating a perfume is to understand how aromas come together to release continuous layers of harmonious odor.  Perfumers build a scent around 2 predominant scents in each chord of base, middle and top notes.  Choose a family of preferred scent:  citrus, 4 oranges, floral, mint, lemons, spicy, woody, earthy, balsam, resins, herbal, anise, pines and spruce, edibles. Several scents are so strong I usually use them alone.  These include eucalyptus, peppermint, oregano, tea tree, pine and artemesias. They are more beneficial in medicinal blends.  I will profile them in the future.

The following are examples of individual scents in families of odor.  Perfumers use absolutes and concretes to extend the aromas.

Citrus:  pink grapefruit, lime, bergamot (a hybrid of orange and lemon)

4 Oranges:  blood orange, bitter orange, petitgrain, sweet orange

Note:   tangerine and mandarin are included in citrus or orange.  Neroli is

derived from the flower of bitter orange.

Floral:  jasmine, linden (lime) blossom, ylang ylang, neroli, rose geranium,

             French tuberose, lavender, helichrysum absolute

Roses include Bulgarian, Turkish, Egyptian, Indian, Moroccan, and

distilled and has a much lower intensity of odor that does not last as

long as the absolutes of roses.

Mints:  Spearmint, wintergreen and several herbals

Peppermint and pennyroyal are used in medicinal blends

Herbal:  Rosemary, sage, thymes of various flavors, clary sage, lavender

absolute and concrete, marjoram, anise, basil of various flavors, fennel,

  marigold mint, tarragon.

Lemons:  Lemongrass, lemon verbena, lemon balm, lemon and litsea cubeba, (May chang is from a flower grown in China)

Earthy:  Angelica root, labdanum absolute, vetiver, patchouli, ginger root,

                          oakmoss, carrot seed, valerian root.

Spicy:  Coriander seed, cinnamon leaf, cardamom, allspice, nutmeg, ginger

,             absolute, clove and clove absolute, black pepper (also green pepper from green seed pods), juniper berries.

Woody:  Cypress, cedar, sandalwood, palmarosa, rosewood.

Spruce:  (Pine, all varieties) Fir absolute, black and white fir absolute.  Spruce is only used for perfume; pine is medicinal.

Balsams:  Benzoin, styrax, Peru balsam, Tolu balsam, tonka bean.

Resins:  Myrrh, francinsense, opopanax.

Edible:   Roman chamomile, green and black tea, cocoa, coffee flowers, cognac, vanilla bean, all varieties.

I have a miscellaneous section:  hay, tobacco flower absolute, ambrette seed flower, costus, blue chamomile absolute, beeswax and tagetes.

To build a perfume, make a chord of 3 to 5 compatible scents each of base, heart and top notes.  Here is a list of essential oils, absolutes and concretes categorized into the 3 major notes.  Base notes are chosen first.

Base Notes

Ambrette seed                          Helichrysum absolute                Tarragon absolute

Angelica root                            Labdanum absolute                   Tea, black or green

Benzoin                                    Lavender concrete                    Tolu balsam

Blue chamomile                        Myrrh                                       Tonka bean

Clary sage absolute                   Nutmeg absolute                       Vanilla

Cocoa                                      Oakmoss                                  Vetiver

Fir absolute                              Peru balsam

Frankinsense                            Sandalwood

Hay                                          (Black and White) fir absolutes

Choose harmonious aromas, that do not overpower one another.  For a vanilla base, choose Peru balsam, benzoin and vanilla. For an Oriental or Spicy base, choose patchouli, sandalwood, frankinsense and possibly a drop of nutmeg.

For an edible base, with an alluring touch, choose cognac, green tea and cocoa.

For a phermone base, choose ambrette seed, helichrysum absolute and labdanum absolute.

Heart notes will extend the aroma of the blend as the predominant scent.  There is a wide variety of scents and combinations.  Blend the aromas as a separate chord.  Cure for at least 3 days before combining the base note chord.  It takes up to 30 days to totally marry a blend for perfume.

Heart Notes

Allspice                                    Lavender absolute                    Tagetes

Basil                                         Lemon verbena             Tuberose, French

Beeswax                                  Lemongrass                              Violet leaf

Chamomile, Roman                  Linden blossom                        Ylang ylang and

Champa                                   Litsea cubeba                           concrete and absolute

Clary sage                                Neroli

Clove and clove absolute          Orange flower absolute

Coffee                                      Osmanthus

Geranium and geranium             Black pepper absolute

absolute and concrete          Rose concrete and all

Ginger absolute                         rose absolutes

Jasmine absolute and                Styrax

    Concrete

Kewda

Choose a combination you really enjoy and will blend with your base notes.  Rose, jasmine absolute and bergamot are the most versatile.

For a sultry blend, choose jasmine absolute, ylang ylang absolute, and orange flower absolute

For an expensive, love blend, choose rose absolute, neroli and champa (also called champaca)

For a citrus blend, choose melissa, lemon verbena, litsea cubeba and linden blossom

For a delicious scent, choose cinnamon, coffee and beeswax

For an inexpensive rose scent, choose geranium, rose concrete and lemon verbena

For a spicy blend, choose allspice, clove absolute and ginger absolute.

Head notes or top notes, grab your attention and leave quickly. They are the first aroma the brain perceives.  Citrus scents are very versatile and friendly top notes.  The following are all essential oils.  Their odor intensity is high, but not long lasting.  Black pepper is often used to reduce the over sweetness in a blend.

Head Notes

Anise                                        Mandarin                                  Wintergreen

Bergamot                                 Marjoram

Carrot seed                              Nutmeg

Cabreuva                                 Bitter orange

Cedarwood                              Orange blood

Coriander                                 Sweet Orange

Cypress                                    Palmarosa

Fennel                                      Black pepper, green pepper

Fir                                            Petitgrain

Ginger                                      Rosemary

Pink grapefruit              Rosewood

Juniper berry                            Spearmint

Lavender                                  Tangerine

Lemon                                      Tarragon

Lime

For an uplifting, friendly blend, choose Orange blood, pink grapefruit, bitter orange and lemon.

For an all orange blend, choose bergamot, tangerine, and sweet orange and mandarin.

For a festive blend, choose fir, rosemary, spearmint and lemon

For a rose-like blend, choose rosewood, palmarosa and lavender

For a down to earth blend, choose coriander, cedarwood, ginger and petitgrain

For a spicy blend, choose nutmeg, black pepper, bitter orange and pink grapefruit.

A basic formula for creating a perfume is 3 drops of the top note or blend, 2 drops of heart notes, and 1 drop of base note.  Begin with this formula and allow the perfume to cure 3 days, if possible, before adding more of any note.  To complete a blend, you may need twice the amount of top notes compared to middle notes, and only a few drops of base notes.  Build the blend carefully, adding a small portion of blends every 3 days until the perfume is complete.  Make careful notes before and after each addition.  Use perfume blotters to smell the result of each addition before you cure the blend for 3 days.  Each perfume you create may require 1 to 6 weeks of preparation before you are satisfied.  Then allow the entire blend to marry up to 30 days.

Children’s Blend

Children’s Blend

Essential oil blends for children are specific for small noses and sensitive to their changing needs. Scent is one of our earliest experiences. Babies bond to their mother’s scent very quickly after delivery. They find comfort in familiar kitchen smells, backyard trees, flowers and grass odors. As children brains develop, they will acquire new interest in new scents like taste for new foods. It is important to use light aromas under safe conditions and in proportion to their size and weight.

When treating babies with aromatherapy, be certain to use essential oils distilled from plants, not synthetic, chemical scents. Aroma lamps are a safe way to dispense the aromas into a child’s room, in tiny amounts. Essential oils are not recommended topically or in baths for children under 2 years old and not used as inhalants under the nose for children under 5 years old. Occasionally, a compress can be used for children with colic by first diluting 1 or 2 drops of essential oil in 4 cups of warm water. I prefer to use herbal tea compress on babies. I will offer both recipes to use with discretion.

Compress for Colic for Children 1 to 4 Years Old

In 4 cups of warm water add and stir

1 drop of Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare)

1 drop Roman chamomile (Anthemis noblis)

Submerge a clean hand towel. Squeeze excess water. Test the temperature on the child’s leg. Apply to the abdomen when the temperature is comfortable until it cools. This may be repeated for 15 minutes. Rub the child’s abdomen gently in a clockwise motion. Contact a physician if cramping continues.

Herbal Tea Compress For Babies and Children under 5 Years Old

In a clean glass or stainless steel quart pan, bring 4 cups of water to simmer.

Add the following herbs or herb:

4 Tablespoons German Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)

1 teaspoon Dill Seed (Anethum graveolens)

Remove from heat immediately. Cover with a tight fitting lid. Allow to steep 15 to 20 minutes. Strain; allow cooling to slightly warmer than room temperature. Submerge a clean hand towel in the tea. Squeeze out excess water. Apply to the child’s abdomen until it cools. This may be repeated 30 minutes.

Calming Nightcap Aroma lamp Blend

1 drop Roman Chamomile (Anthemis noblis)

An aroma lamp is made from porcelain, ceramic or glass. The lamp has a small container for about one tablespoon of water. Add the essential oil to the water and heat the water by a light or small candle. The aroma will fill the room with a very subtle odor.

Alternate for Aroma lamp

Put 1 drop of essential oil on a light bulb and turn on the light, preferably a nightlight.

Children’s Aroma bath

Water is a safe way to introduce essential oils to children 5 and older. Remember to use a carrier oil to disperse the essential oil. Do not bath children with an adult, using blends for adults. Children thrive with a few safe essential oils, preferably not lavender for young boys. Too much exposure to lavender can adversely affect male hormones in a child. Children enjoy Rose, Vanilla, both very expensive, Chamomile, Rosewood, Neroli Orange Blossom, Geranium in 1% or less dilution in bath water.

Soothing Bath

Combine in 3 tablespoons of honey and add to bathwater.

3 drops Roman Chamomile (Anthemis noblis)

1drop Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)

1 drop Neroli (Citrus aurantium)

Stir the water to disperse the honey and oils. Test the bathwater temperature before allowing the child into water. Soak 15 to 20 minutes while bathing.

Homemade Rosewater Bath for Sensitive Skin, Eczema, and Stress

Simmer 2 cups of fresh, fragrant, organically grown rose petals in 4 cups of water, covered for 30 minutes in a pan. Remove from heat. Allow to cool, covered. Strain, squeezing the petals tightly. Add to bathwater and soak 20 minutes.

Exotics, Part III

Exotics, Part III

Vanilla, Vanilla planifolia, is an orchid, indigenous to Mexico, Central and South America. The essential oil is extracted from mature beans by a solvent, such as grain alcohol. Essential oil floats on top of the solvent and is removed by low heat until only the oil remains. Vanilla essential oil may be hardened into a thick, waxy mass. This is called a concrete and must be warmed or thinned with alcohol to produce a black thick gooey liquid.

Vanilla and its essential oil is presently very expensive, thousands of dollars a pound. Fortunately, only a tiny amount is needed in a blend. The essential oil is a low note. It is a heavier oil that holds a blend together and allows the scent to lift over a long period of time. Vanilla is such a strong scent, it can easily overwhelm a blend. Use the smallest eyedropper to put 1 drop in a 1 or 2 ounce blend. This blend will hold its fragrance longer and help the recipient feel centered. Vanilla blends well with orange, lime, lavender, and Rose Damascus essential oils.

I use Vanilla in blends to reduce weight. The scent is very comforting and helps the recipient feel secure. It is also helpful for people who have been abused. Typically, they also have weight issues that vanilla essential oil helps. However, anyone who enjoys the smell of vanilla can benefit from this essential oil.

Children love the smell of vanilla. I use the essential oil in several children’s blends. The most popular blend aids children with ADD or ADHD.

The odor of Vanilla essential oil is so strong it is only used very diluted in blends. There is promise of a lighter scented essential oil from a new variety of vanilla found in Peru last year. A student I met from Texas Christian University helped discover a new variety of vanilla and brought beans to my lab. The scent was very warm and distinctly vanilla. The new variety might be used alone when it is commercially available. Until then, here are a few ideas for blends.

            Children’s Room

In a 2 ounce bottle with a mister, add:

1 drop vanilla essential oil

6 drops orange essential oil

Fill bottle with distilled water.

Mist in a child’s room to promote a feeling of warmth and security.

            Attract a Lover

In 2 ounces of sweet almond oil add:

1 drop vanilla essential oil

3 drops Ylang Ylang

2 drops Sandalwood

Allow to cure 1 to 3 hours. Apply a few drops to the neck and seize the night!

Vetiver, Vetiveria zizanoides is a native grass originating from northern India. It is a very tall perennial related to Lemon grass, Palmarosa and Citronella. The plant has dense rootlets radiating 1 to 2 feet from its center. I grow it in Texas on slopes to prevent soil erosion. In India, the roots are woven into mats and screens, enjoyed for their aromatic property.

The essential oil is steam distilled from the rootlets, which are cut and soaked in water before distilling. Vetiver essential oil is dark, thick and reddish brown. The aroma is warm and earthy. Two hundred pounds of rootlets yield 1 pound of essential oil. The cost of Vetiver essential oil is very expensive. Fortunately, a drop in a blend is sufficient. It is frequently used in perfumes to allow the scent to lift over hours. However, the cost of the pure essential oil is so expensive, companies use vetiverylactate synthetic oil for most perfumes and cosmetics.

In aromatherapy, Vetiver is used in blends treating anxiety and nerve disorders, panic attacks and anorexia. It is helpful in blends for stress related illness and depression. Ancients believed it centered the recipient and reconnected the individual to his/her inner being enhancing wisdom and understanding. The essential oil was used for weak immunity in baths and massage oils. Vetiver also treats sexual dysfunction and low libido. Dilute 2 drops in a body massage oil, or add 5 drops into a bathtub of warm water for a 20 minute soak.

How does vetiver treats both sexual dysfunction and insomnia? It’s all in the blend. Used alone in a bath or massage oil, vetiver is calming, warming and pain relieving. Complementary oils include Clary sage, lavender and geranium. To increase libido and sexual function, combine Vetiver with Jasmine, Ylang ylang, lemongrass or sandalwood. Use the blend as a perfume or make an all over body massage.

A sports blend may include Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Orange and Clove bud essential oil. This blend also increases circulation to assist healing for arthritis and rheumatism.

Vetiver also helps relieve menopause symptoms, post partem depression and mood swings. It has a calming estrogenic effect for females. Vetiver may be worn singly or blended with lavender, rose and geranium essential oils in a sweet almond oil base.

In skincare, Vetiver balances sebum secretion to treat acne and oily skin. For aging skin, Vetiver regenerates the deeper layers of skin that have lost fat content. I use it in creams for sagging skin and deep lines. It is 1 component of a blend I make for breast enlargement, sagging breasts and stretch marks. Women like the aroma the more they see results.

            Oily Skin or Acne Blend

In 1 ounce of jojoba oil, add the following essential oils:

5 drops of Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)

3 drops of lemon grass (Cymbopogon citrates)

1 drop of Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides)

Bottle in dark glass with a screw top. Allow to cure up to 3 hour before using. Apply a few drops on clean skin and massage gently, covering the entire face or site of concern.

            Aging or Dry Skin

In 1 ounce of jojoba or sweet almond oil add the following essential oils:

5 drops of Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)

1 drop of Ylang ylang (Canagium odoratum)

1 drop of Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides)

2 drops of Rose (Rosa damascena)

Bottle in dark glass with a screw top. Cure 1 to 3 hours. Gently massage 3 or 4 drops onto skin after cleansing. It is best to patch test dry or cracked skin before smoothing on the entire face.

The Other Orange

Blog 19- The Other Orange

Bergamot, Citrus bergamia, is similar to bitter orange. It is best known for the distinctive flavor given to Earl Grey tea. Most people enjoy the aroma more than the taste. You may have smelled bergamot in colognes and creams.

The origin of this tea is Asia. Today it is mainly grown in Reggio di Calabria, at the tip of the boot of Italy. The best essential oil is grown here, a hybrid of bitter orange and lemon trees. During flowering and harvest, November through February, the region smells like a little bit of heaven.

Bergamot essential oil is made from the inedible, green fruit. The oil is expressed from the glands in the skin. The peel is rasped, squeezed, and pressed. Contents are clarified and filtered to produce an emerald green essential oil. The fruit is yellow and pear shaped. Bergamot is unique in every way and enjoyed by most everyone.

When an aroma is uplifting and unusual, like Bergamot, it has a greater impact in the brain. It is a high or head note in aromatherapy and perfumery. Therefore it will register first in the brain. Studies in Europe confirm that Bergamot essential oil balances the activity of the hypothalamus. This allows it to help bipolar disease and reduce anxiety, depression, and fearfulness. Research by Paoli Rovesti through the University of Milan, was conducted at several psychiatric clinics with outstanding success. Bergamot either calmed or energized people, adapting to their bodies needs. Those plagued by chronic fatigue and stress, found the aroma to be strengthening, and rebuilding for their stamina. Depressed people experienced Bergamot in another way. It enhanced their self-confidence as well as reducing depression. The essential oil was worn, diluted in carrier oil, or applied to an aroma lamp.

For depressed or nervous conditions, bergamot combines well with many essential oils. The citrus family of essential oils: grapefruit, lemon, lime tangerine, mandarin, bitter and sweet orange combine well. I find that clients with these psychological conditions often love the smell of citrus oils.

Other essential oils that combine with bergamot include lavender, angelica, clary sage, cedar, lemon balm mint, and to a lesser extent rose. Bergamot dilutes the high odor of content of essential oils, such as pine, rockrose, cypress, patchouli, cedar wood, vetiver, angelica root, and ginger. Combining essential oils creates a totally new molecular chain. First, the individual essential oil molecules entirely break down and new chains are created from the group of the essential oils combined.  They create a new scent with new therapeutic properties. The possibilities are endless. Every aromatheraist becomes a chemist of scents.

In Italy, bergamot is used to combat infectious disease. Bergamot has been successfully treating staph, diphtheria, meningitis, and many other illnesses. Before World War 11, were not available. Doctors and clients used bergamot for skin, mouth, and respiratory infections. For respiratory problems, the steam of the oil was inhaled and infused in a room. What a delightful way to get well! The oil can also reduce fever. It was applied to the body as a compress. Bergamot has a history of treating malaria as a compress.

In a sitz bath, bergamot relieves cystitis. The oil can reduce abdominal cramps administered in a bath, or diluted in a carrier oil, and applied to the abdomen.

Most interesting is that bergamot treats anorexia. It reduces appetite loss and relieves anxiety and depression. If abdominal problems are involved, bergamot can likely reduce those also. The scent is very light and uplifting, cooling to an overwrought nervous system. People dubbed, as type A will do well to make bergamot their companion. The aroma reduces cranky and frustrated, pent up feelings increasing digestive and skin problems.

For skin problems, bergamot relieves psoriasis, eczema, acne, seborrhea on the scalp, and herpes 1 cold sores. I use it with several essential oils to treat scabies.

Bergamot must be purchased, bergaptene free. Otherwise it increases photosensitivities and may be harmful to the skin, when exposed to sunlight within 12 hours of application.

The essential oil derived from bergamot fruit actually decreases sensitivity to sunlight. Furocumarin, a possible allergic property is removed from the essential oil to assure safety. It is a component in many suntan lotions.

For dry, chapped skin, bergamot can be combined with Roman chamomile essential oil to alleviate symptoms.

In 1-ounce jojoba or carrier oil add:

                        4 drops Roman chamomile

                        1 drop of Bergamot

Allow curing 1 hour before applying to rough or chapped skin.

Note: To apply Bergamot essential oil to the skin, dilute it to 1% or less in a base oil.

Cap tightly in a dark, glass bottle.

Bouquet of Citrus fragrance: Pick me up

Here is a blend based on Bergamot and Oakmoss (base note)

                        In 1-ounce jojoba oil add:

                        1 drop Oakmoss, Evernia prunastri

                        6 drops Bergamot

                        2 drops of lime

2 drops Orange or Bitter orange

                        1 drop Geranium, optional

Allow to cure 1 to 3 hours.

Note: Oakmoss is also known as Mousse de chene.

Bottle in a dark, glass bottle and cap tightly.

Here is a very commonly used combination. I reduced the patchouli, which can overwhelm the other oils.

In 1 tablespoon of jojoba oil add:

                        1 drop Patchouli

                        10 drops Geranium

                        10 drops Bergamot

Cap tightly in a dark, glass bottle. Cure up to 1 week before enjoying.

Wear it or put it in the bath.

Optional: add 1 or 2 drops of lavender or tangerine (or both) to create a new blend.

Compresses

(Blog 6)

Compresses are a relaxing and healing therapy for local, topical, complaints and facials.

Warm compresses open the pores to facilitate essential oil penetration. Essential oils may be used singularly or in combination.

Step One: In four cups of hot water, add 6 drops of essential oils. Immediately place a small clean hand towel in the solution and squeeze out the excess water into the bowel. Quickly place the cloth onto the painful area. Wrap the towel with plastic wrap, if desired, to retain the heat. Repeat the process every 15 to 20 minutes for up to 1 hour to achieve the best results.

Warm compresses are useful with muscular cramping, joint pain, arthritis, and backaches. Menstrual pain without heavy bleeding will also be helped. Avoid hot compresses with migraines, heat flashes, swelling, sunburn, burns and fever. Also, avoid hot compresses with itchy and oozing, inflamed skin conditions.

Detoxification and lymphatic drainage is assisted by warm compresses and stimulating essential oils. A favorite for women is a combination of essential oils to break down cellulite.
